I suppose this is not a "normal" fruit mash, isn't it? Commonly the ammonia smell is formed by ingredients which are added to compensate low-nutrient (starch) mashes. Yeast cannot feed from mashes with low nutrients content. So it's a must to add nutrients. Normally also a nitrogen source belongs to the nutrients mixture. This ingredient can, under certain circumstances, form this ammonia smell.
To be honest, I don't know exactly why this smell is sometimes formed and most often not.
Since ammonia is rather volatile, I would suggest to aerate the distillate and thereafter distill it a second time.
